New Song: God the Spirit

New Song: God the Spirit

The Holy Spirit is perhaps the most misunderstood and neglected member of the trinity. In our day and age there is often not enough thinking and studying and singing about the Spirit’s work in God’s plan for his glory. It is our desire to sing songs that will help us to think rightly about not only the Father and Son, but the Holy Spirit as well.

God the Spirit is a text from 1866 (found in Samual J. Stone’s Twelve Hymns of the Twelve Articles of the Apostle’s Creed) and a tune from 2010 (by Matt Boswell, in Cardiphonia’s Pentecost Songs compilation). In it we are reminded of the Spirit’s unity with Father and Son, along with his work of inspiration, regeneration, sanctification and preservation. In light of these glorious truths it is right for us to adore him!

God The Spirit
Words: Samual J. Stone
Music: Matt Boswell

1. Holy fount of inspiration
By whose gift the great of old
Spoke the word of revelation
Marvelous and manifold

God the Spirit we adore Thee,
In the Triune Godhead One
One in love and power and glory
With the Father and the Son

2. Author of the new creation,
Giver of the second birth
May thy ceaseless renovation
Cleanse our souls from stains of earth

3. When we wander Lord direct us,
Keep us in the Master’s way
Let they strong swift sword protect us
Warring in the evil day

Shall the church now faint or fear
When the Comforter is near
